BMI (body mass index) is your weight (kg) divided by the square of your height (m). By the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity (KSSO) criteria, 25 or higher is considered obesity. Enter your height and weight to see the result right away.

Example: height 170 cm, weight 72 kg → 72 ÷ (1.7 × 1.7) = BMI 24.9 · Source: KSSO Clinical Practice Guidelines for Obesity · Reviewed by the Medical Director, Yonsei DANA ENT Clinic

How BMI ranges are divided

Because Koreans and other Asians face a higher risk of metabolic disease at the same BMI, the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity uses 25 as the obesity threshold, lower than the World Health Organization's international standard (30 or higher).

BMI (kg/m²)CategoryWhat to check as well
Under 18.5UnderweightWe check whether you have recently lost weight and whether there are issues with food intake, digestion, or other causes.
18.5 ~ 22.9NormalWaist circumference, blood pressure, blood sugar, and lipids can change independently of BMI, so we check them regularly.
23.0 ~ 24.9Pre-obese (overweight)A stage to check how fast your weight is increasing, your waist circumference, and whether you have coexisting conditions.
25.0 ~ 29.9Class 1 obesityAlong with diet and activity adjustments, we check for high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and sleep apnea.
30.0 ~ 34.9Class 2 obesityWe evaluate coexisting conditions and make a management plan together.
35.0 or higherClass 3 obesityCoexisting conditions are often present, so an evaluation through a consultation is needed.

Calculate my BMI ↑

BMI uses only height and weight. It is hard to apply as is to people with a lot of muscle, people whose body fat is concentrated around the belly, or during pregnancy or growth. Waist circumference, body composition, blood pressure, blood sugar, and lipid levels need to be considered together.
WEIGHT & METABOLIC CARE

About weight management care

At Yonsei DANA ENT Clinic, the director looks at your weight changes and metabolic status together in one-on-one care. We do not decide treatment by a single number; we make a management plan after checking coexisting conditions and your living circumstances.

We review your history and coexisting conditions

We check when and how fast your weight increased, your eating, sleep, and activity patterns, your medications, and whether you have coexisting conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemia, or sleep apnea.

We recommend the tests you need

Along with waist circumference and body composition, we recommend tests such as blood pressure, blood sugar, lipids, and liver function as needed. The tests depend on your symptoms and previous results.

We decide on a management plan together

Diet and activity adjustments are the foundation, and when needed we also consider GLP-1–class treatment. The treatment approach depends on the results of your consultation.

We adjust while following your progress

We adjust the plan while checking changes in weight as well as any discomfort and changes in test values. The degree and speed of change differ from person to person.

Eligibility for medication is not decided by numbers alone

A BMI of 25 or higher does not by itself mean you are a candidate for medication. Eligibility is determined by considering BMI together with coexisting conditions, and eligibility, drug, and dose are decided by the doctor after a consultation. In many cases, adjusting diet and activity is recommended first.

Discomfort that can occur during treatment

During GLP-1–class treatment, digestive symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, constipation, and diarrhea are relatively common. Pancreatitis and gallbladder disease have rarely been reported. If you experience discomfort, do not adjust the treatment on your own; tell us at your visit.

Effects differ from person to person

Even with the same management, the degree and speed of weight change differ from person to person. Average values reported in studies do not guarantee individual results.

About services and costs

Weight management care may include services not covered by Korean National Health Insurance. Tests and treatments depend on your care, so we explain them at your visit.

Alongside weight management, we also offer care that looks at fatigue and metabolic issues. However, IV drips or nutritional treatments do not by themselves reduce weight. Weight change is managed through diet and activity adjustments and medical care.

Frequently asked questions

At what BMI is someone considered obese?

By the Korean Society for the Study of Obesity (KSSO) criteria, a BMI of 25 or higher is considered obesity. Under 18.5 is underweight, 18.5–22.9 is normal, 23–24.9 is pre-obese, 25–29.9 is class 1 obesity, 30–34.9 is class 2, and 35 or higher is class 3. The World Health Organization's international standard considers 30 or higher to be obesity, which differs from the Korean/Asian criteria.

Can obesity be judged by BMI alone?

BMI is calculated only from height and weight, so it cannot distinguish people with a lot of muscle or those whose body fat is concentrated around the belly. That is why we also check waist circumference, body composition, and coexisting conditions such as blood pressure, blood sugar, and lipids. The BMI result is reference information and does not replace a diagnosis.

If my BMI is 25 or higher, do I need medication?

No. A BMI of 25 or higher does not by itself mean you are a candidate for medication. Eligibility for medication is determined by considering BMI together with coexisting conditions such as high blood pressure, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and sleep apnea, and eligibility, drug, and dose are decided by the doctor after a consultation. In many cases, adjusting diet and activity is recommended first.

How does weight management care proceed?

Through your history and examination, we check how your weight has changed and any coexisting conditions, recommend the tests you need, and then make a management plan including diet and activity adjustments. When needed, we also consider GLP-1–class treatment; treatment effects and progress differ from person to person. Weight management care may include services not covered by Korean National Health Insurance; since these depend on your care, we explain them at your visit.
