First, we identify the pattern of your dizziness
At the examination, we look at posture changes, duration, recurrence patterns, and accompanying symptoms such as hearing changes, headache, and palpitations. We refer to previous hearing, vestibular, ECG, and imaging results to decide which evaluation is needed.
Each test checks something different
| Test | What it checks | Limits of interpretation |
|---|---|---|
| HRV | Pattern of variation between heartbeats | Affected by breathing, sleep, medications, and more. Cannot confirm a diagnosis on its own. |
| Blood pressure and pulse on standing | Blood pressure and heart rate response after a change in posture | Rapid changes may be missed depending on the timing and method of measurement. |
| Tilt-table test | Changes in blood pressure, pulse, and symptoms in a tilted position | Cannot rule out every other cause of dizziness. |
Information on HRV and tilt-table testing is available on our official website. The specific tests and whether they can be done the same day are confirmed at the visit.
HRV does not show every autonomic function
The autonomic nervous system is involved in many functions, including heart rate, blood pressure, sweating, and digestion. HRV is not a test that confirms all of these functions with a single score.
If you have orthostatic symptoms, your symptoms and changes in blood pressure and pulse need to be evaluated together. Any further tests are decided by clinical judgment.
Before testing
- When booking, please check whether testing is planned and how to prepare on the day.
- Do not stop prescribed medications on your own; please bring a list of your medications.
- Follow the instructions for each test regarding fasting and limiting caffeine.
- Please tell the medical team about any history of fainting, heart disease, or possible pregnancy.
- Please bring previous test results and notes on the situations in which symptoms appeared.
FAQ
If my HRV is normal, can POTS be ruled out?
No. HRV and blood pressure and pulse measurements on standing check different things. We evaluate your symptoms and your responses to posture changes as a whole.
Does every patient with dizziness need a tilt-table test?
No. We choose the tests you need based on your history, examination, and basic evaluation. Whether a test is needed and whether it can be done the same day are decided after the consultation.
How can I check the cost and time required for testing?
These may vary depending on which tests are included and whether Korean National Health Insurance applies. Please check with the clinic when booking. We will explain the tests you need and their costs after the consultation.
